The fountain at the Lion was erected in 1576 as a result of Kientzheim treaty, signed in 1575, under the arbitration of Lazarus Schwendi, between the representative of the Abbey of Saint-Gregoire and those of the community inhabitants of the valley and the city of Munster. This treaty is a milestone for its inhabitants. It recognizes, among other rights, free exercise of religion Lutheran. By this treaty, Munster now becoming a real imperial city with a large degree of autonomy with respect to the Empire.
The oral tradition says that whenever the town was in conflict with the abbot, she turned the lion so he showed his post to the abbey, which placed the abbot in an angry black…
The original fountain at the Lion was at the crossroads of streets, in front of City Hall. Mutilé during the French Revolution he was relegated to an obscure hangar of the former abbey where "Société d'Embellissement", founded in 1883 by Jean-Michel Heid (1832-1904), rediscovered, the restoration and installation in Park André Hartmann. In 1934, he was installed in its current location, Market Square. (I. M. H. 1985). |
